چکیده

We review recent results on necessary and sufficient conditions for measures on R and ∂D to yield exponential decay of the recursion coefficients of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. We include results on the relation of detailed asymptotics of the recursion coefficients to detailed analyticity of the measures. We present an analog of Carmona’s formula for OPRL. A major role is played by the Szegő and Jost functions.

Computing polynomials orthogonal with respect to densely oscillating and exponentially decaying weight functions and related integrals

Software (in Matlab) is developed for computing variable-precision recurrence coefficients for orthogonal polynomials with respect to the weight functions 1+sin(1/t), 1 + cos(1/t), e−1/t on [0, 1], as well as e−1/t−t on [0,∞] and e−1/t 2 −t on [−∞,∞]. Numerical examples are given involving Gauss quadrature relative to these weight functions.

Fine Structure of the Zeros of Orthogonal Polynomials, Iii. Periodic Recursion Coefficients

We discuss asymptotics of the zeros of orthogonal polynomials on the real line and on the unit circle when the recursion coefficients are periodic. The zeros on or near the absolutely continuous spectrum have a clock structure with spacings inverse to the density of zeros. Zeros away from the a.c. spectrum have limit points mod p and only finitely many of them.

A concise expression for the ODE ’ s of orthogonal polynomials

It is known that orthogonal polynomials obey a 3 terms recursion relation, as well as a 2 × 2 differential system. Here, we give an explicit representation of the differential system in terms of the recursion coefficients. This result is a generalization of an expression of Fokas, Its and Kitaev for the symmetric case.

A Set of Orthogonal Polynomials Induced by a Given Orthogonal Polynomial

Given an integer n ~ 1, and the orthogonal polynomial1rn (· ; du) of degree n relative to some positive measure du, the polynomial system "induced" by 1rn is the system of orthogonal polynomials {7rk,n} corresponding to the modified measure dUn = 1r~du. Our interest here is in the problem of determining the coefficients in the three-term recurrence relation for the polynomials 7rk,n from the re...

Perturbations of orthogonal polynomials with periodic recursion coefficients

We extend the results of Denisov–Rakhmanov, Szegő–Shohat– Nevai, and Killip–Simon from asymptotically constant orthogonal polynomials on the real line (OPRL) and unit circle (OPUC) to asymptotically periodic OPRL and OPUC. The key tool is a characterization of the isospectral torus that is well adapted to the study of perturbations.
